"Do or die" is a sense of seriousness that may be imposed on you, either by your destiny, or deliberately by yourself alone.
It means a deadline of a death ground, where you have a huge wall at your back and enemies are about to attack you from front.
You have no further opportunities to procrastinate any more, but have to invariably develop required fire from your courageous inside to attack, in advance, to kill your enemies before they dare attack and kill you.
The wise learns earlier in life to embrace deadlines deliberately and make right use of them in their differential rises. Such deadlines function in life as the principal catalysts for rapid growth.
